Akagera National Park is Rwanda’s only savannah national park, located in the eastern part of the country along the border with Tanzania. The park features a strikingly diverse landscape of open grasslands, rolling hills, woodlands, wetlands, and a chain of scenic lakes linked by the Akagera River. This variety of habitats makes Akagera one of the most visually diverse parks in East Africa.
Once heavily impacted by human pressure, Akagera has become a remarkable conservation success story following strong protection and restoration efforts. The reintroduction of lions and black rhinos has restored the park as a complete Big Five destination, allowing visitors to experience classic safari wildlife including elephants, buffaloes, leopards, giraffes, zebras, antelopes, and numerous predators in a well-managed environment.
Akagera is also a paradise for birdwatchers and nature lovers, with its lakes and papyrus swamps supporting a rich diversity of water birds and rare species. Combined with excellent game drives, boat safaris, and peaceful scenery, Akagera National Park offers an authentic and less-crowded safari experience, perfectly complementing Rwanda’s famous gorilla trekking destinations.
